Senate Republicans quashed a bill Monday night that would fund the government and lift the debt limit, sending Democrats scurrying for a backup plan to prevent a shutdown this week.
GOP senators rejected Democrats' attempt to move forward on the package that would have kept federal agencies funded through Dec. 3 and prevented the nation from defaulting on its debt over the next two years. The vote was the first test of the GOP’s threat to force Democrats to handle the debt limit on their own as the Treasury Department warns that the country is likely to exhaust its borrowing ability next month.
