Congressional Democrats are proposing lifting the debt ceiling through the 2022 midterm elections as part of their plans to fund the government into December, leaders said on Monday afternoon.
The decision demonstrates that Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will follow through on pursuing a debt limit via a bipartisan vote rather than budget reconciliation, though Senate Republicans have vowed to oppose the increase. The government runs out of funding on Sept. 30 and the debt ceiling must be lifted shorty after.
