House Democrats passed a short-term spending bill Tuesday evening intended to ward off a government shutdown at the end of the month and a default on the nation’s debt in the coming weeks.
The measure would keep the government open until Dec. 3, provide tens of billions of dollars in emergency cash for hurricane and refugee aid, and suspend the approaching debt cliff until after the midterms in 2022. However, Senate Republicans have vowed to reject the package as long as it includes the debt limit, moving Congress no closer to a resolution on both fiscal problems.
